The Year One teacher is Miss Aleppo supported by Ms Serwaah. By Year One the children are becoming increasingly independent. In Year One every child has their own place to sit and work.
Everyday children have a 25 minutes phonics lesson (using Letters and Sounds programme and Jolly Phonics). They are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds and blending them together. The children take home reading books from the Collins and Oxford Reading Tree schemes.
Every morning we teach the National Curriculum expectations for Maths using the Singapore Maths method. We teach children to count and apply different mental strategies for addition and subtraction, recognise shape and pattern and solve picture and word problems. The children quickly learn to notice patterns and develop their mathematical thinking and problem solving skills.
Every week the children have two sessions of science. The topics covered are Seasonal Changes, Animals (including humans), Everyday Materials and Plants.
