P.E. and Sports
At St Mark’s we believe that healthy and active children are more successful and happier learners. That is why we invest time and money into ensuring we offer a broad P.E. (Physical Education) experience for our pupils both in and out of their timetabled lessons.
We give all the children the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of physical activities. At least two hours of P.E. lessons are timetables each week for every class (for pupils in Years 1-6).
In addition to curriculum P.E. and competitive sports fixtures we offer a wide range of after school sports clubs as well as lunchtime sports throughout the week.
Children also have swimming lessons run by GLL at Canons Leisure Centre. The children go swimming for two terms in Year Three. Below is a table showing swimming data for our current Year 6 pupils.
Meeting national curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety | |
What percentage of your Year 6 pupils could swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres when they left your primary school at the end of last academic year? | 40%* |
What percentage of your Year 6 pupils could use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke] when they left your primary school at the end of last academic year? | 50%* |
What percentage of your Year 6 pupils could perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations when they left your primary school at the end of last academic year? | 14%* |
Schools can choose to use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to provide additional provision for swimming but this must be for activity over and above the national curriculum requirements. Have you used it in this way? | Yes |
*Please note that this cohort of pupils last had swimming lessons in Year 4.
It is very important that parents provide opportunities for their children to be active outside of school. Below are some links to websites that signpost you to local sporting facilities and organisations.
Please feel free to speak to a member of school staff if you would like further support with promoting a healthy lifestyle for your child.
