Welcome to
St Mark's
Primary School

We are a successful and aspirational school where pupils from all backgrounds achieve strong results in a stimulating and safe environment.

Committed to Excellence

Year One

The Year One teacher is Ms Chyld and she is supported by Mrs Wilkins and Miss Misztal.  We aim to make the children's transition from Reception to Year 1 a smooth one and balance their curriculum with a mixture of play-based and more formal forms of learning.

Children in Year 1 continue to be taught to read and write using systematic synthetic phonics (Phase 5 from Letters and Sounds). They are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds and blending them together.  The children take home reading books which have been chosen to reinforce their learning of phonics in class: Read Write Inc. Big Cat Phonics and Jolly Phonics are within this range.

Every morning we teach the National Curriculum expectations for Maths using the Singapore Maths method.  We teach children to count and apply different mental strategies for addition and subtraction, recognise shape and pattern and solve picture and word problems.  The children quickly learn to notice patterns and develop their mathematical thinking and problem solving skills.

Our Year 1 children experience a wide range of learning opportunities across their curriculum. Please see below for a snapshot of their learning across the academic year.
