The teacher in Year Two is Mrs Thorpe who is supported by Ms Anipare. We expect a lot of our Year Two children as they work more independently and participate in more whole class activities.
In Year 2 there is a more detailed focus on handwriting. We are beginning to learn which letters are to be joined and we are encouraged to form our letters correctly.
We read and write every day and learn to write for a range of purposes including stories, poetry and real events. We continue to improve on our phonics from Year one and develop onto Phase 6 of the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme. We learn grammar and spelling patterns and rules, and begin to apply those in our writing. Every week we take home reading books from the Read Write Inc. scheme, and we progress onto the accelerated reading program.
In Year 2, we teach the National Curriculum expectations for Maths using the Singapore Maths method. In our Maths lessons we learn our 2, 5 and 10 times-tables. We learn to add and subtract with two-digit and one-digit numbers. We also learn multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times-tables. In fractions, we find 1/3, 1/4 1/2 and 3/4 of a shape or a quantity of objects. We study measures, including weight, capacity and length, and learn to tell the time to five minutes. We also study properties of 2D and 3D shapes, as well as a range of data-handling methods such as bar charts and pictograms. By the end of Year 2 we are also expected to know the number bonds to 20 and be precise in using and understanding place value.
In Science we learn about living things and their habitats, plants, animals (including humans) and uses of everyday materials. We also learn how to work scientifically, how to observe closely, and how to record our observations.
